Forklift Certification

Obtaining valid forklift certification is a common general skill requirement for many people within the industrial industry, such as warehouse employees and construction workers. Becoming properly certified to operate a forklift safely and effectively must follow a particular method of training and education. There are numerous ways to obtain forklift operator certification, either through a current employer or on one’s own through a recognized training facility.

The vast majority of companies who own and operate forklifts on the jobsite are required by local safety organizations to ensure all staff who will be using the machinery to be properly trained and certified. The Occupational Safety Health Administration is one such organization in the USA who requires all forklift operators to be certified. Stiff penalties and fines can result to the employer if they fail to correctly comply with these regulations.

Often an on-site manager is responsible for putting employees through a forklift training certification program. Topics covered through the training include a general understanding of forklift components, safety tips and proper use of a forklift. Comprehension of the training will be assessed and a performance test will be administered. Upon successful completion of these tasks, a certification card will be awarded.

For those who desire to become a certified forklift driver, they may be required to complete a course offered at an industrial equipment school or a forklift certification training school. These courses consist of in-depth training on different kinds of forklifts, a written and driving test and safety techniques. Upon successful completion of the test, a forklift certification card will be awarded.

A forklift certification is usually valid for 2-3 years once it is obtained. Since the forklift certification designation is portable, it can easily be presented to an employer for any work performed on a forklift at a worksite. Obtaining proper forklift certification is an important job requirement for many positions in the industrial industry. Failure to obtain correct training and certification can cause serious injury to oneself, fellow employees and company property. Prior to operating a forklift, ensure asking the immediate supervisor about getting certified as a forklift operator to avoid any costly mistakes and ensure a safe work atmosphere.
